I've never understood the desire to be famous, especially to be famous for nothing. It's very clear that many people simply want to be well known. Doesn't matter what it's for - they just want people to know who they are. I really started thinking about this recently with Johnny Manziel. It's pretty clear the guy just wants to be a famous football player. He doesn't actually care about being good. Don't get me wrong, he wants to be good, I'm sure. But he doesn't care so much that he's going to devote himself to making sure he gets better. And that's what gets me. Why wouldn't you want to become the best you possibly can, and let the fame take care of itself? JJ Watt has pretty much taken that approach, and I'd say it's working out well for him.
Don't get me wrong, it'd be great to be well-known. But I'd like people to know who I am because of who I am. How I carry myself, my actions, my accomplishments. Not because I'm great at marketing myself or I've built up such an aura that people are mesmerized. Hopefully, at some point, people will stop falling for the sizzle and keep their eye out for steak.
"What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals." -Zig Ziglar
I've also seen it put as something to the effect of "the great thing about goals is the person they force you to become to achieve them."
